A Review of the Nokia N97

The recent trend in the mobile phone usage has been towards Smartphones. These devices are smarter than the average phone. They practically amount to having a tiny computer in your pocket, with which you can view and edit documents, browse the internet, check your email, and much more besides. They allow people to conduct much of their life or business activities easily whilst on the move. Along with the more powerful and feature-rich abilities, have come improved user-interfaces, and a movement away from standard numeric keypads. This improves the operability of the phone, and allows the user to complete the new tasks the Smartphone can perform with minimal frustration. The latest Smartphone offering from mobile phone giant Nokia, is the N97. On paper the specifications for the N97 are pretty special. The 3.5 inch display is very big for a phone. The quality Carl Zeiss 5-megapixel camera does a better job than a lot of compact digital cameras. The full qwerty keyboard, accessed by sliding up the screen, is great for typing. And with 32GB of storage, and the option of another 16GB via the microSD card slot, it has the capacity to store all those songs, photos, and applications you will be using it for. This combined with the 3.5mm headphone socket means that you really don`t need a standalone portable media player in addition to the N97. For accessing the internet the N97 has HSDPA, so the pages load quickly, and a choice of using the default or Opera mini-browser. In addition it has wi-fi so you can go online using that instead of your phone network, if you are within a wi-fi area. Nokia offers the Ovi store, where you can download new applications, and although not as well-stocked as some of its rivals, it is very new so the choice should improve over time. Indeed the N97 comes with lots of apps already, with QuickOffice for Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents, as well as a pdf reader. The N97 is quite a chunky object. Although it is not as wide as something like the iPhone, it is considerably thicker. This is almost entirely due to the qwerty keyboard, but at 150g, it`s not the lightest of phones. Probably the N97`s biggest flaw is that its touchscreen is resistive, unlike the iPhone`s which is capacitative, which means the touchscreen on the N97 is not as responsive, and can be a little hit-and-miss in comparison. This is arguably mitigated by the presence of the qwerty keyboard, meaning you don`t have to type using a virtual keyboard on the touchscreen. Overall the Nokia N97 is an impressive device: a feature-rich, high-spec phone with a great camera, music player, oodles of storage, and good online capabilities. The critical factor is probably whether you prefer using a qwerty keyboard or a touchscreen, because if you prefer the touchscreen there are probably more appropriate mobile phones for you.
