Sciphone G15: A Master Piece?
The SciPhone Dream G2 is not fashion enough to haunt your dreams, so have a look at the SciPhone G15. Released early 2010, it incorporates all the features that make the success of the G2 (208 Mhz processor, EDGE, WiFi, USB 2.0, POP3 / IMAP4, accelerometer, Java…) and adds some new features: dual SIM, quad-band, GPS, TV tuner and a new touch screen.
While the G2 shows a more corporate look, the G15 is very fashion. White is currently in fashion so the G15 is white, HTC Android's are everywhere, so the G15 clones the HTC Magic, Blackberry is a hit with the trackball, guess what? the G15 includes a trackball. The SciPhone G15 is a concentrate of what works on the market.
So the G15 is perfect? Not really, first, the G15 is not a true Android, it has the look, it allows you to access to some preinstalled Google applications (this requires a data connection) such as Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google news... but as it runs on proprietary OS, therefore, you will not have access to thousands of applications from AndroLib. Another sour note, the TV tuner is of no use in the countries with digital TV broadcast like in Western Europe: it still uses an old analog tuner. It's good to have an integrated GPS module but you will have to install the cartography yourself, as only very few countries are supplied with the phone.
So we believe that SciPhone was close to be a best seller, but they miss the train, at least in Europe. However, we really look forward to the next model.
