I lost my phone today while in central london on a day out, I had it during the evening but realised it was gone while on the tube back home. Called the insurer and was told i have to report it to the police to get a crime reference number. Would the police simply give me a crime ref number if I call them up, or would it be a long process?

My phone was stolen in mid april but I haven't reported it to the police as I was away for a while. Do you know if they would still honour it being stolen and pay for a new one? I cancelled my sim in mid April, should I tell them this and will they find out?
